From a Distance

Hotel of the Laughing Tree is the musical collaboration between AJ Estrada, Brandon Peterson, Neil Scalesse, and Jonathon Streker. With a history spent sharing the stage together throughout countless venues and DIY dungeons up the East Coast, they now reside in their respective states of Ohio, Tennessee, and Massachusetts, working digitally to create new records.

Established in 2008 with the release of Old Dominion, the band has released six full length records, toured extensively, and are previous MTVu award winners. With a DIY ethos, everything from their music, videos, artwork and band merchandise has been self-produced out of a pure love of making things. “Melody is King” has been the groups guiding mantra, and north star.

Although you’ll be sure to find elements of dynamic riffage, lush soundscapes and unique instrumentation sprinkled throughout, Hotel’s musical priorities remain in service to the song. At the end of the day, Hotel have crafted a treasure trove of catchy melodies to uncover, bounce around in your head, and hopefully make you lean in to see what’s happening just beneath the surface.

The band is at a point where they’re genuinely making music purely for the love of it.
— No Country for New Nashville
This is a record rife with mature production and songwriting, and it’s proof the years apart have not merely been idle. This is how to reintroduce yourself. Welcome back, guys.
— iamtunedup.com
This is a band that knows that life is precious and should be celebrated at every turn
— The Punk Site.com
Exquisitely nostalgic and soaked in the heaviness of storytelling that reveals just enough emotional and culture cues to make you want to know the song’s back story in total.
— American Pancake

The follow up to Faraway Friends would have never happened without the idea of making a retrospective podcast about the band.

Once the conversations started, relationships were rekindled and ideas spread like wildfire. Soon, after a productive winter of dropbox files, discord messages, and many late nights, there was a new album ready to be heard.

A Mountain Fastness was made purely out of love for music and admiration of one another. Full of energy and grit, A Mountain Fastness boasts all of Hotel’s strengths — crafting a familiar sound while also venturing off into uncharted territory.

A Mountain Fastness

We pride ourselves on being a full DIY operation. This includes writing, producing, recording, managing, and marketing our body of work. After the music is done, all of the band’s artwork and visual branding is also created by us.
